Wrap coat

PATTERN: Butterick 3925 (1980s)
Completed December 2019

I fell in love with this plaid wool at a local fabric store. Trouble was, there was less than two yards of it. It’s an uneven plaid so layout options of the pattern pieces would be limited. My solution was this boxy drop-shoulder, wrap coat pattern. The pattern pieces were almost rectangular, which simplified pattern matching and minimized wasted fabric. I had to shorten the pattern and narrow it at the bottom to fit more pieces across the width. I didn’t have enough fabric for facings, so I lined edge-to-edge with silk crepe de chine. Perhaps not the sturdiest choice, but I loved the color and feel of it. I even had to piece the belt out of two pieces of the plaid and line it with the silk as well. The patch pockets are also lined in silk and were applied by hand for a perfect match of the plaid.

The end result is comfy and warm, and it was a satisfying make.
